Tournament of the Champions
St. Joseph's College will hold the first "St. Joseph’s Cup: Tournament of the Champions" international chess tournament on October 27 and 28, 2018. The tournament will take place at the school’s new campus expansion at 26 Kennedy Road, Central, Hong Kong (Hong Kong Grade 1 Historic Building). This is the first time the campus is opened for public event. The school has invited 8 world champion amateur players to participate in the tournament. Among them is Mr. Daniel Lam, a St. Joseph College alumnus graduated in 1993. This tournament also offers one of the highest, if not the highest, prize money in the amateur chess competition worldwide.
Daniel won the championship in the "World Amateur Chess" Blitz Group in 2017. There were about 40 international players from Ukraine, Germany and Russia. Daniel is the first chess player from Hong Kong to win this international competition.
St. Joseph's College always committed to nurturing students and prepare them to better serve the society and the country. Over the years the school is fortunate to have produced numerous talents and elites. The new campus expansion provides students with more space for activities in different context. The school takes this opportunity to organize the first "St. Joseph’s Cup: Tournament of the Champions", to promote chess to young people. Through this tournament, students can compete and learn from the world champions, thus improving their chess skills and strategies. It is also a great opportunity for the public to watch all these world class players in action.
The first "St. Joseph Cup: Tournament of the Champions" is co-organized with the Hong Kong Chess Association. There will be live commentary during the competition to ensure audience inside the viewing room can understand the moves and tactics. The opening ceremony will be held at 10 am on October 27, 2018.
